A muse. What is that exactly? The definition I find and like in part is as follows: a woman, or a force personified as a woman, who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist." I kind of like that, a muse has a feminine persona and influence. But, what if the source of my inspiration is of male gender? I still believe it's the intuitive nature of being a woman that shapes it and drives it. My muse is our Paso Fino stallion Adonis. That's not his registered name, but the one we gave him, his barn name. It's unquestionably perfect for him, he is a golden god. The camera loves him, my husband loves him, I love him and my canvases love him. So I'm sharing with you a photo of when we first got him. His mane was partially rubbed out, we didn't even know he had 4 white anklets since he was living in a tiny pen full of mud. His beauty astounded us and he's never failed to make us regret having him. Powerful, yet kind, sensitive, intelligent. Though all male, he is this woman artists muse.

I don't have a wip update for you again this evening, so here are more of the smalls I have available. These would be great little gifts for the upcoming holidays, who doesn't like that special, one of a kind surprise? For your horse loving spouse, children, family away from home, friends, acquaintances, your barn manager, farrier- the list goes on. These are part of the Summer of 2014 60 series that weren't claimed, and with these, the gift keeps on giving since I donate $8 of each sale to horse rescue efforts. There is some money in the fund waiting to be donated, I'd like to see it grow a bit more to make the money I give go further.  They are all 6x8x1.5 gallery wrap for $68 each + shipping.
These are going to be posted from earliest to latest, with 3 each post. So far #2, #5 and #8 have been posted. Please feel free to contact me for more info, or to purchase. Thank you!

WIP of © "Once Again"

Day three in the continuation of the acrylic painting Once Again. I laid in some background and deeper shadows. I have always liked warm browns coupled with turquoise blues.

WIP of © "Once Again"
I did some more work on once again by adding some texture to the canvas. There is fiber paste for the background and a mix of modeling paste, gel and course pumice on the horses head and neck. After it dried all day, I put in my beginning block of color, the shadows with brown. Since I have such a love affair with the golden horses you can easily guess where I'm going with that. I don't know what I'll do next, but whatever it is, will be the next installment of this wip.

WIP of © "Once Again"
I have had such a positive response to the painting titled encore from my rhythm and hooves series which is great. I have felt an urge to do more and this reaction just fuels my creative fire even more, and I have 2 wip with this technique started. This one will be shown as a wip with several photographs to allow you to see it grow and gain life. I think I'll be calling it "Once Again". I hope you enjoy the process. It's being done with acrylics on a 16"x20"x1.5" gallery wrap canvas, and will be available for sale once completed.

© "Swing"
This 11"x14"x1.5" acrylic gallery wrap features a horses head done in my line style, using warm ocher and sienna with reds. I just love those golden colored horses with their flaxen mane and tails, or white. Swing got it's name from how the masking formed a couple lines that looked like a swing set seat soaring up into the air. If you'd like to give Swing a home, let me know, he's offered at $125.00. © "Encore"

There are 12 acrylic paintings in my "Rhythm and Hooves" set, this piece is a 20"x16"x1.5" gallery wrap acrylic of a golden textured horse with accents of turquoise and teal. I've been thinking of how to approach doing my horse paintings in a similar fashion to my line style, but by a different technique. I was very happy with how it developed, and turned out to be one of my favorites.I named it "Encore" with the intention to see if I liked this new way of creating my horses and if my fans liked it and wanted to see more, I'd be happy to oblige and do this again. It is SOLD, so indeed, I will do more!

It was this piece that was done first, and was the inspiration to do the music and dance series for my solo show. I was very pleased with how it developed, and besides a couple others, is one of my favorites.

An "A" for the AAEA.

The American Academy of Equine Art Juried Fall Open Exhibition opens next week, and for the first time, I am going.  I am stoked.  Not only does it give Steve and I a great excuse to go to an art opening (after all, my art travels much more than I do!) but did I mention it's the American Academy of Equine Art?  In Kentucky?

The AAEA is recognized as one of the preeminent art membership organizations in the world dedicated to the advancement and excellence of equine art.  Membership is by jury and invitation only, and it's rather difficult to achieve.  Even the Fall exhibition - the only show that's open for nonmembers internationally to apply for, is extremely competitive.  It's not uncommon for them to receive hundreds of entries, and they must jury it down to less than 80 pieces of art.  Getting a spot is very, very difficult.

When I was younger, my favorite magazine was called The Equine Image, and it was devoted to equestrian art.  The very first issue I ever received had a huge feature on the AAEA's Fall show (I guess that must have been 1986?  1987?) and immediately, I was hooked.  I  pored over those pictures from the opening reception.  All these artists - artists who drew horses! - surrounded by magnificent equestrian art, smiling and posing and socializing, with the artwork singing off the walls.  I knew I wanted to do that some day, and it became my first "bucket list" art entry.
Fast forward to college when I decided to focus on equine and wildlife art and illustration as a career.    A notice drifted across my desk for the AAEA Fall Open Juried Exhibition, and I realized I could make the deadline.  Full of hope, I picked my three best horse pieces, packed off the slides (SO glad we've gotten away from slides) and settled down to await my acceptance letter.  I think I even bought a bottle of wine to celebrate.
...
...
...
To this day, that may be the single most brutal rejection letter I've ever received.  Not only was everything summarily rejected, but all of the judges included scorecards with the rejection letter, and I got to see what they really thought of my work.  It wasn't pretty.  (I still have that letter, and I come across it every once in a while in my files.  Even now, several years later, it still isn't pretty.)  I drank the wine.  I think I cried.  I probably contemplated a career as a dental hygienist.
Thankfully, in the years since that first, ill fated, unpleasant rejection letter, I have gotten art juried into the AAEA show.  I've also received other rejection letters, and, while they aren't ever pleasant, none of them hold a candle to that first crushing disappointment.
The AAEA has continued to mean something special to me and to all the other artists who depict the equine form.  And, for me, it's above and beyond a society of equine artists.  It's the realization of a dream, and the thing that gave me hope and inspiration and focus when I was lost and searching for a way to make a career out of this art thing.  I'm honored to say that I've been juried in four times now, which makes me eligible to apply for full membership.  I plan to enjoy my first ever trip to Kentucky and the AAEA Fall show, and then return home to Dallas to prepare my membership application.  I think I may even chance another bottle of wine.
Here are my four successful AAEA entries from past years.

© "Together Again" sold

I had done a small 4 horse painting that I knew someday I'd repeat on a larger scale, and got my chance when a paso fino owner commissioned me to do a 2'x 4' enlargement of that little painting. This was a very satisfying painting to work on, and it was hard to wrap up and send away. Can't hang them all on the walls here though. The little one was titled "Work Together" which was a News Years message, and with the revival and reunion of the 4 horses in the larger painting, I called it "Together Again".

© "Jewel" sold
I get comments often that my paintings have a stained glass quality to them. With "Jewel", I emphasized the spaces with varying colors to give the further impression of leaded glass. I loved using all those bright and gorgeous colors to paint this, and felt like I had an array of semi-precious stones as a palette. Done in acrylic. This painting is sold.

Peek at the painting "Opera"
Here's another peek at my music/dance themed set. This one was a challenge I placed on myself to portray the horse from an angle I find difficult to execute. I guess for that reason it's become on of my favorites because I liked how it came out.
Shawnee, Oklahoma First Friday September 5th is rapidly approaching, and that means my
