Horse Painting Color Study by Karen Baker Thumm

"Twilight Reverie" color study for larger painting

Yesterday I had fun creating this color study for a new painting. The objective was to work out color mixes and make sure that they were going to harmonize with one another. A bit of a surprise was how much warmer and more intense the colors became when painted over a yellow toned canvas board.

Color studies are fun to do because you don't have to worry about details and getting all the proportions just so. Keeping the paint application loose is also fun. Doing them works out many problems ahead of applying paint to the final canvas and can prevent having to revise and waste more paint.

The colors are more intense that anticipated, but I'm working on a solution for that. You can read all about it in my personal blog post, too.
